Power relocation work continues on Sepulveda Bl at the Getty ramps.

An additional weekend for vault installation work has been scheduled to start at 9pm Friday, February 24, 2012 through 6am on Monday, February 27, 2012.

Installation of false work for bridge reconstruction at the Sunset Bl has been scheduled from Friday, February 24, 2012 through Wednesday, February 29, 2012 and from Friday, March 2 through Wednesday, March 7, weeknights.

Removal of the freeway wall along NB 405 between Bellagio Rd/Acanto Dr to Getty Center Drive started on Thursday, February 23, 2012 and will continue through Monday, March 19, 2012. Work hours are from 8am to 5pm, weather permitting.

Two Coyotes: Linda Flora & Chalon Road - 6:30AM

Please see below a note from a Bel-Air neighbor:

Around 6:30AM Saturday the Feb 18th a neighbor was out walking on Linda Flora just near the John Thomas Dye school when she spotted 2 coyotes about 50 ft away from her walking towards her in the street. Worried for herself and three dogs, she quickly turned around and headed home. The coyotes began to follow her for several houses until a car drove by scaring them both away.

All is well, no pets or people were injured, but thought it was important to share so neighbors could be alert.

In addition to notifying our Bel-Air resources at coyotereport@hotmail.com, please report ALL coyote or aggressive wildlife sightings to the below authorities. It is imperative they receive this information as it clearly depicts the serious issue facing Bel-Air and its neighboring communities.

You MUST immediately contact the West Los Angeles Animal Services at 310-207-3156 and file a Wildlife Sighting Report. If they say that they do not accept reports over the phone, say that you were told by Officer Randall (the Wildlife Officer in charge of our area) that they are supposed to accept phone reports. You would file this report whether it was a mountain lion or a coyote.

Also, please file a report with the Dept of Fish and Game at 562-596-3885.

We need to keep notifying the appropriate wildlife authorities about this serious problem that threatens human safety.

405 Work Notices: 405 & 10 Fwy Connector Ramps

· The contractor will continue work on a soundwall along the NB 405 connector ramps to EB 10 and WB 10. Work will take place starting Thursday, February 23, 2012 for approximately three months, from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm and 9:00 pm to 5:00 am. Connector ramp closures will be intermittent and only at night.

· The contractor will start construction on a drainage line along the EB 10 connector ramp to the SB 405 starting Monday, February 27, 2012 for approximately three months. Work will take place from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm and 9:00 pm to 5:00 am. Ramp closures will only occur at night.

BEL-AIR WATER OUTAGE: WATER MAIN BREAK AT BEVERLY GLEN BLVD. AND CORFU LANE

Earlier this morning there was a water main break on Beverly Glen Blvd. (south of Mulholland) and Corfu Lane, 9077. LADWP work crews and LAFD are on location conducting repairs.

Traffic is backed up north and south at both ends of the main break.

Please distribute this advisory to your respective mailing lists and/or list serves and advise others to avoid Beverly Glen and take an alternate route.

The rumors about President Obama being helicoptered to Cheviot Hills are sounding a bit more likely.

Reader Marjorie just wrote to us and said:

Possible that he will be helicoptered over near Cheviot Hills, streets are quiet over here (no road blocks seen, cops, signs, etc) and we didn’t hear any military aircraft do there checks before hand like we normally do.

Update 1:43pm (2-15-2012)

We’ve heard from a couple of readers that Rancho Park /Cheviot Hills park is closed and their children’s activities have been cancelled. We’re not sure why. The rumor is that the president may be helicoptered there, although we feel that is probably unlikely.

Update 9:12am (2-15-2012)

Looks like some rain could further complicate traffic matters when President Obama visits for fundraising this afternoon in Los Angeles.

The White House has released his schedule for today. As we previously predicted, Obama will arrive around 4pm at LAX. He is scheduled to speak at the event at 6:10pm. So he will most likely be affecting trafffic on the westside between 4:45pm and 5:45pm.

We’ve also got the street closures Obama’s visit to Corona del Mar on Thursday:

Seaward Road from East Coast Highway to Driftwood Road
Evening Canyon Road from Morning Canyon Road to Shorecliff Road
Driftwood Road from Morning Canyon to Shorecliff Road
Morning Canyon Road from East Coast Highway to Shorecliff Road
Shorecliff Road

Those streets will be closed from 6am until Noon. Any vehicle parked on those streets will be towed.

President Obama will be returning to Los Angeles for fundraising on Wednesday, February 15.

You know what this means — many street closures and delays as the presidential motorcade goes to and fro.

The good news this time is that he won’t have to travel as far as usual, so the traffic impact should be lighter. Also, most closures are expected to be “rolling” which means police pick up the barricades as soon as the President’s motorcade has passed.

Here’s what we have so for as we continue to piece together the closures. These are our best assumptions taking in to account past visits and current info. This is highly subject to change!

Here’s the big question mark – President Obama will be attending a breakfast at the home of Jeff and Nancy Stack in Corona del Mar at 7am.

It is unclear if President Obama will travel via car or via helicopter to Newport Beach. Newport Beach police did tell the Orange County Register that they are working with the Secret Service but no route has been planned.

Because it is so early, it shouldn’t disrupt traffic too badly.

That being said, the following major roads are MOST LIKELY to be disrupted:

405 between West LA and Costa Mesa/Irvine
73 between 405 and Newport Coast Dr
Newport Coast Dr
Jamboree Road
Macarthur Blvd
San Joaquin Hills Rd
Pacific Coast Highway (1)

There’s a chance that the President may be helicoptered somewhere like John Wayne Airport and then driven the final stretch.

OCTA bus routes most likely to be affected include 1, 57, 76, and 79.

Where: Sunset Bl bridge between Barrington Av and Veteran Av; south Church Ln from the SB ramps to Kiel St.

What to expect:
• Local access will be maintained to businesses and local residents via a flagger.

Leading lady Jennifer Aniston has bought a midcentury house in Bel-Air that was listed at $24.9 million.

The seller was former Maguire Properties Chief ExecutiveRobert F. Maguire III, who restored the 8,500-square-foot house designed by A. Quincy Jones and built in 1965. The sales price has not yet appeared on the public record.

Set on a 3-acre-plus promontory with unobstructed ocean and city views, the house features an open floor plan, walls of glass, a bar, a projection room, a wine cellar, four bedrooms and 61/2 bathrooms. The grounds include a guesthouse, swimming pool and vineyards.

Aniston, 43, made a name for herself on television for her Emmy-winning role on "Friends" (1994-2004). She starred last year in "Just Go With It" and "Horrible Bosses," and found time to sell her Beverly Hills estate for $35 million. Her film "Wanderlust" is due out this month.

Maguire founded his company in 1965, took it public in 2003 and left day-to-day operations in 2008. The Los Angeles office landlord is now called MPG Office Trust.

At the time Maguire bought the Bel-Air property in 2000 it was listed at $9 million.

BAA's Project Pothole Works with City Street Services to Repave Problem area near 1565 Stone Canyon Road

The Bel-Air Association is excited to announce the recent repair, grading and repaving of a serious problem area near 1565 Stone Canyon Road.

The Bel-Air Association's Project Pothole team worked closely with several Street Services representatives and supervisors to have the repair placed on their priority grading/repair list.

This has been a major concern and increasingly dangerous issue for many residents and motorists for years. Many temporary solutions were attempted, but none would alleviate the problem for long, continually forcing drivers into oncoming lanes to avoid the water filled potholes and ridges in the road.

A special thanks is due to a Lindamere member who stayed very focused on and attentive to the issue.

The repair is hoped to now channel water properly and prevent it from settling/running across the middle of the road.

Another special thanks to the City team who helped orchestrate this repair. It is greatly appreciated for the safer and smoother ride for drivers.

Here is a special, short notice invitation for some American Red Cross
disaster services training that will happen on campus this Saturday,
Feb 11. If you are able/willing, we'll we teaching three classes from
9 am - 5 pm in Ackerman 2408. Course descriptions are further below,
but these are the standard, "entry level" classes classes taught to
all American Red Cross shelter volunteers who provide care to those
displaced from their homes by disasters. These are also the classes
sometimes referred to as "CERT Level 2", but that's a little bit of a
misnomer.

• Identify resources available to assist shelter workers.
• Organize the physical facility and material resources to meet the
needs of the people in the shelter.

Shelter Simulation
The purpose of this training is to provide participants with an
opportunity to apply the knowledge, skills and abilities required to
operate a successful shelter.

We are over half way done with the current CERT class at UCLA, and we
are currently in the works for scheduling one in either Spring or
Summer...more on that later. The hosting department is working out
the dates best for their staff.

Finally, today is the anniversary of the San Fernando/Sylmar
earthquake, which killed 65 people. That happened before I was born,
which reminded me that we now have an entire SoCal generation which
has never experienced a major earthquake (because our 1st year
undergraduates don't remember the Northridge earthquake!).

If you would like to book a basic disaster preparedness presentation
(variable length from 20-60 minutes) for your campus activity or
program, the American Red Cross at UCLA has presenters who can provide
that service for you.

You'll see the course descriptions for those Red Cross classes further
below. I'll be the instructor. The classes will run together, one
following the other.

Keep Bel-Air Safe ALERT: Recent Door-to-Door Solicitation

Tuesday afternoon, it was reported that a woman claiming to be a college student was going door-to-door soliciting sales to help toward college funding. She appeared to be very intent on getting into houses. At one home, she claimed to have been sent by neighbors from up the street - she even used their name.

At times, she refused to leave. She was viewed walking up-and-down the street to each house exhibiting the same aggressive behavior.

Security personnel was notified.

No further information is available at this time.

Please exercise extreme caution in these circumstances. If you witness any suspicious behavior, please notify the appropriate law enforcement and security personnel.

Operations to widen the Sepulveda Bl bridge at the Getty ramps will start with excavation and pile driving work on the east side of the bridge. This work is necessary for bridge foundation work.

What: Excavation and pile driving for bridge foundation

When: Work is anticipated to start on Monday, February 6, 2012 for approximately three weeks. Anticipated work hours are from 7am to 4am, weather permitting.

Where: Sepulveda Bl undercrossing at the Getty ramps

What to expect:

• Pile driving operations are anticipated to start on Thursday, February 9, 2012 for approximately one week.

• SB Sepulveda Bl will be reduced to one lane between the SB Getty on-ramp and the NB Getty off-ramp.

An extensive art collection of late actress Elizabeth Taylor has fetched a total of $21.9 million at Christie's auction. The collection, which was from the actress's Bel Air estate, contained rare works by major artists.

This includes works by famous artists Van Gogh, Degas and Pissarro which fetched competitive bidding by several interested parties.

Other highlights of the auction include a youthful self-portrait by Edgar Degas (1834-1917) and a large-scale landscape by Claude Pissarro (1830-1903), called Pommiers a Eragny. The pieces were sold for £713,250 and £2,953,250 respectively.

The top lot included an artwork by Vincent Van Gogh that fetched 10.1 million pounds ($16 million), including fees. The painting called Vue de l'asile et de la Chapelle de Saint-Remy shows a view of the asylum where Van Gogh spent his last months and was bought by Taylor's father, who was an art dealer, in 1963.

In total, the combined works by Degas and Pissarro fetched over 13 million pounds at the Christie's sale, more than double their pre-sale low estimate of 6.2 million pounds.

Taylor is known for her enduring passion for art reported to have been instilled by her father who was an art dealer himself.

Christie's has announced that a portion of the sale's proceeds will be donated to the Elizabeth Taylor Aids Foundation.

Home Invasion Robbers Steal 2 Motorcycles Worth $1.5 M From Bel Air Home

BEL AIR (CBS) — Officials say two home invasion robbers kicked in the front door of a Bel Air Estates home, tied up a husband and threatened his wife, before making off with two rare motorcycles with a combined value of $1.5 million.

Police said the incident occurred around 4:30 a.m. at a home in the 900 block of Linda Flora Drive, on a hilltop street above Sunset and Sepulveda Boulevards.

“Two males kicked open the victim’s front door,” Los Angeles police said in a report. “The husband and his wife were awakened by the noise.”

Officer Rosario Herrera wrote that when the husband got up to investigate the noise, the suspects confronted him, took him into another bedroom and tied him up.

“The suspects also confronted the man’s wife and told her to stay in the bed.”

The wife later fled and ran to a next door neighbor’s home.

Louisa Hodge, reporting for CBS2 and KCAL9, spoke to neighbor Anne Lesser who says she was awakened by her neighbor yelling for help outside her front door. “There was a woman screaming, ‘Call 911, call 911!’”

Lesser has lived next door to the couple for six years and believe they were targeted. She says the owner often shows the vintage bikes publicly; most recently at the Beverly Hills Car Show.

The suspects took two motorcycles, worth more than $1.5 million, and fled the scene, Herrera said. One of the bikes was a 1914 Cyclone and a vintage 1952 Honda, a racing bike.

The bikes were the only thing taken from the home, according to officials.

Descriptions of the two suspects were unavailable.

Shaken, the couple escaped unharmed.

Lesser said neighbors are considering new safety measures. “We used to think we didn’t need 24-hour security. But … maybe now we do.”

The Garden Conservancy hosted a meeting on Tuesday, January31, 2012 from 5pm to 7pm at the Community Magnet School in Bel-Air. Therewere over 80 Bel-Air residents and members of the community who attended toexpress their concerns about the sale of the Hannah Carter Garden. Theentire room voted unanimously opposing the sale of the UCLA Hannah CarterJapanese Garden. Guest Speakers were Professor Kendall Jones, Representatives from Cal State Long Beach and some of the world's expertson North American Japanese gardens.

2 Coyotes Sighted: Savona Road & Roberto Lane - 10:30pm

I was walking my 35 lb dog west on Savona Road near the intersection with Roberto Lane when a coyote came running out of the private road at that intersection, running east on Savona. A minute later a second coyote followed the first. Both of them saw us on the sidewalk but fortunately they kept to the other side of the road, and disappeared down Savona. This was about 10:30 pm January 30.

Upcoming Full Northbound 405 Closure

ATTENTION RESIDENTS AND BUSINESS IN THE VICINITY OF THE
MULHOLLAND BRIDGE AND THE I-405 SAN DIEGO FREEWAY

The contractor is scheduled to construct a falsework structure to facilitate the reconstruction of
the Mulholland Bridge. A bridge falsework structure will get erected temporarily at the freeway
median to provide support during the reconstruction of the Mulholland Bridge. A full directional
northbound freeway closure is scheduled for two nights beginning Wednesday, February 1, 2012.
The northbound I-405 freeway will be closed from the Getty Center Dr. ramps to the 101 freeway
during the late night hours, weather permitting. Each night, ramps within the freeway closure
limits may begin to close as early as 7:00 pm and freeway lanes will begin to close as early as
10:00 pm, leading up to the full directional freeway closure between the hours of 12:00 am,
midnight, to 5:00 am. After the freeway closure the contractor will continue to construct the
bridge falsework structure for about a month, which may require freeway lane closures and
additional full directional freeway closures.

What: Falsework erection to support the reconstruction of the Mulholland Bridge

When: The full northbound directional freeway closure is anticipated to begin Wednesday,
February, 1, 2012, and last for two nights, weather permitting. Each night, ramps
within the freeway closures limits may begin to close as early as 7:00 pm and freeway
lanes will begin to close as early as 10:00 pm, leading up to the full directional
northbound freeway closure between the hours of 12:00 am, midnight, to 5:00 am.

Where: A full directional northbound freeway closure between the Getty Center Dr. ramps to
the 101 freeway

What to expect:

- Sepulveda Blvd. will remain open during the nights of the full directional freeway closures
and will be used as a detour route. Detour maps are available at www.metro.net/405

- Emergency access will be maintained at all times

- Further updates concerning additional freeway closures will be provided once scheduled

The City Street Services team was out Saturday 1/28 to fill the holes specifically requested on-and-around Bel-Air Road.

The Garden Conservancy, a national garden preservation group, has joined the Los Angeles Conservancy, California Preservation Foundation, the California Garden and Landscape History Society, and concerned individuals to gather public interest and support to save the garden.

Kendall Brown, noted authority on Japanese gardens in America, will discuss the history and significance of the garden at this gathering. We have invited UCLA officials to join us and share their perspective. We welcome your ideas and help in saving this garden treasure.
